GYSA’s Rec Game Day Lights Up Lights on Afterschool
Las Vegas, October 17, 2023 — On Sunday, October 15th, Greater Youth Sports Association (GYSA) hosted its highly-anticipated annual Recreational Basketball Game Day Event, and this year, the occasion was made even more special as it was aligned with the nationwide “Lights on Afterschool” celebration, sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance.
The “Lights on Afterschool” event, a nationwide initiative, shines a spotlight on the vital role afterschool programs play in shaping the lives of young people and their communities. GYSA was thrilled to participate in this event and support the cause.
The day kicked off with an inspirational speech by GYSA co-founder, Devonte “The Coach” Woodson, who addressed the young athletes. He emphasized the importance of showing up, active participation, skill development, and having fun with their peers. Many of the kids in attendance had never played basketball before, making the event a unique opportunity for them to learn and grow.
Recreational Game Day was designed to provide an enjoyable and non-competitive environment where students, ranging from 2nd through 5th grade, could put their learned skills to the test. The event took place at the Paradise Recreation Center in Las Vegas and saw an impressive turnout of approximately 300 attendees, including children and their families who came to show their support.
GYSA program staff and coaches were not alone in orchestrating this fantastic day. The Coronado High School Key Club generously provided volunteers who helped with student and family check-in, offered guidance, and kept score. Their invaluable support contributed to the success of the event.
“Rec Game Day is one of our absolute favorite days of all our programming,” shared GYSA co-founder Annalise Lullo. “It is such a fun opportunity for the kids to show up and have a great time, with their families there to support them. We are thrilled that this year’s event was able to be a part of the Lights on Afterschool initiative. Afterschool programs play such an important role in the lives of young people, and to be part of a nationwide event that highlights that is really exciting.”
Greater Youth Sports Association extends its heartfelt thanks to all the participants, sponsors, volunteers, and attendees who made this event a resounding success. The organization remains dedicated to its mission of utilizing sports to improve the physical and mental health outcomes of our nations youth.
